Title: Too many cliches
Post by: harry_aus on November 06, 2009, 04:48:26 PM
Whether its the media, everyday conversations, and
even in English learning-environments, we are all being constantly  bombarded with far too many overused cliches. Some are as old as the hills.
Government leaders and politicians, who should know better, toss them around at the drop of a hat. And in contemporary movies - well, they take the cake.
I've therefore made a personal resolution, starting right now, to cease using cliches.
From now on, I will be avoiding them, like the plaque.

Excuse me, I don't have to be an airline pilot to understand this!  The books by Don Watkins are really interesting on the barstardisation of English.

I was going to post on this thread far more often, but then decided to take it one day at a time.

I agree. Not a good idea to charge at things
like a bull in a china shop.

The Guardian (UK) newspaper commissioned a survey on over-used cliches in the
media and internet in 2006. That "found that "at the end of the day" was the most over-used cliché in newspapers and websites - clocking up an eye-watering 3,347 mentions between January and June".
Coming in behind that were "level playing field", "wealth of experience", and
(the excruciating!) "thinking outside the box".

Yesterday, I heard a daytime radio interview with some politician who
used the "elephant in the room" metaphor. And last night, unbelievably!,
watching a TV current affairs program, that same "elephant-in-the-room" was spoken twice, by two different people, in the space of 40 minutes!
But I've no idea what, why, and how, this pachiderm is supposed to be doing in some room?

Actions speak louder than words...............

but a picture is worth a thousand words. This leads to the question, which speaks louder, actions or pictures?

Funny, last week in my adult class I did a whole period on clichés. At first they thought what's the value as I didn't explain them. There are about 250 of the most common ones. Next class (at the end of the day  kkkkkkkkkk )they were amazed.

it just shows to go you

I love spoonerisms too but not too mucking fuch
