Should I Be Worried About Pollution in Shenzhen?
« on: October 06, 2014, 03:31:56 AM »
Hello Everyone,

I'm reading about polluted cities in China, etc.  I'm worried that being outside of the US will make me do bad habits (such as washing fruits and vegetables with tap water) that will cause serious problems.

Is there any risk of lead poisoning, mercury, parasites, radiation, etc.?

  • How's the water?
    • Fukushima has changed everything.

I've never had a problem, but I'm a bit OCD when it comes to washing produce anyway, but still no problems. I miss China's produce. The produce in Mexico isn't as wonderful as I expected it to be. China definitely has better produce.

As far as radiation is concerned, that's a crap shoot. Between Fukushima, nuclear bomb testing, new nuclear power plants, and rumors of leaks getting into the water supply, who knows? Unless you have a Geiger counter that is sensitive enough to detect the presence of radiation, but you still won't know which isotope is present, just that radiation is present. The technology to detect exact isotopes is out of the average consumers price range, but the technology exists.
