Post by: xwarrior on May 11, 2011, 03:27:40 AM

Quote
Microsoft announced the acquisition of Skype 8.5 billion U.S. dollars in cash

Can anyone see any good coming out of this?

What you should probably be using anyway, since it is secure and there are free versions:

I think Microsoft coming back into the front of the battle for the internet is a good thing. They have a bad image with people on here cos we all remember the 90s but most of their newer stuff is pretty reliable imo

The obvious thing to use for VoIP (voice over IP, Internet telephony) is Zphone:
http://zfoneproject.com/

Probably the only secure (untappable) way to do 'net telephony. Developed mainly by Phil Zimmermann who did PGP, the standard way to encrypt email. Crypto is notoriously hard to get right. One reference on the difficulties (my writing) is:
http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Cryptography#Cryptography_is_difficult

I'm inclined to believe Phil and the others involved would get it right. It is well-known, at least in security expert circles, that Skype got it hopelessly wrong:

http://www.fiercevoip.com/story/skype-tapping-program-code-released/2009-08-31

There is an RFC (Internet standards document) for ZRTP, the protocol (set of rules for communication) used in Zphone:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6189

That means the protocol is (unlike Skype's) properly documented; anyone can implement it from the RFC and (of course, after some debugging) expect it to talk to anyone else's implementation. A free version is already being worked on and there's at least one commercial product as well.

my computer is pretty much on 24/7 but on the occasional reboot my AV asks if i want to allow skype to make changes to my computer. I now have it in my decline all requests and i manually update. It works perfectly without any popup nonsense like i see on others computers. Im always suspicious of these auto update settings. seems all that updates on my android apps is adverts.
