something for thoughs
« on: August 22, 2007, 04:14:16 PM »
If a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it, does it make a sound? If two people argue, and one of them doesn't hear the argument, can the damage be undone?

These lines put me into deep though. what do you think of them?

Thought maybe?

The 1st part is based on nothing existing without human 'noting' - this clearly isn't true.  The world does not exist because we are in it to hear/see/note etc.  As a koan it's not too good.

The 2nd part - the answer depends on the people. People rarely hear arguments - they are too busy constructing their own version of what the other person said and their own answers and justification.  So the damage is internally constructed.  It can be deconstructed as easily.

Again not a specially good koan.

Very thought-provoking, though too deep for me!

Don't worry about it, Felix. If you weren't there when it happened, it didn't happen, right?....or if it did, it wasn't your fault! agagagagag agagagagag

Yes.  After years of waiting, they whoop and yell when they feel that final freedom.

No.  For the hearts of man are petty.  They will whoop and yell from the time they are born till the time they, exhausted, look finally to fall asleep.

Ok, I dug and dug, and found one:

Everyday Life is the Path

Joshu asked Nansen: `What is the path?'

Nansen said: `Everyday life is the path.'

Joshu asked: `Can it be studied?'

Nansen said: `If you try to study, you will be far away from it.'

Joshu asked: `If I do not study, how can I know it is the path?'

Nansen said: `The path does not belong to the perception world, neither does it belong to the nonperception world. Cognition is a delusion and noncognition is senseless. If you want to reach the true path beyond doubt, place yourself in the same freedom as sky. You name it neither good nor not-good.'

At these words Joshu was enlightened.

Mumon's Comment: Nansen could met Joshu's frozen doubts at once when Joshu asked his questions. I doubt that if Joshu reached the point that Nansen did. He needed thirty more years of study.

In spring, hundreds of flowers; in autumn, a harvest moon;
In the summer, a refreshing breeze; in winter snow will accompany your.
If useless things do not hang in your mind,
Any season is a good season for you.

Don't worry, Feliks......there are plenty of others who write like they're using a foreign language! Anyway, if it happens on the Internet and no-one notices, it didn't really happen!
