One thing that I am just like Chinese is lack of patience. But even for me, the Chinese are amazing in that regard. They wait for nothing and no one. I could not drive here, I would be deported for assault. They cannot be bothered to wait on anyone, or give someone else space. How many times have you been in a car, taxi or bus, when the lane runs out and there is a race between vehicles to be in front of the line, or having cars refuse to let someone in. Just a general lack of courtesy.
Driving has actually gotten better, but especially outside the major cities, there are very little traffic laws. Don't hit anyone. Don't get into an accident, if you do, dont be drunk, it's OK to be drunk as long as you dont hit anyone. This is not an exaggeration, especially in the rural areas. It seems that the police rely on speed cameras to catch people.....speeding. Well, drivers do much more than just speed. That's OK, I like living in a country where there isn't roaming bands of jurisdictional pigs pulling people over for nothing trying to arrest people as revenue makers for the state. It is also nice that I live in a place where guns are illegal and there aren't people with firearms shooting people for pissing them off or not signaling in a turn lane.
I dont miss driving one bit. Really. The bus and the taxi are my means of getting around my city and it has worked very well. At least in the USA, a car is more or less mandatory with the government, state and local, extorting monies from the driver, not to mention having to give my money away to criminal insurance companies (I hate insurance with a white hot passion), buying a car tag, going to the DMV, not to mention all the costly repairs. I like not having to be dependent on a machine, in many parts of the USA, if the car breaks down and one does not have the extra cash to fix it, they are screwed.
Having a car here is not easy anyhow. For one thing, there are few places in the city to park the thing. If you can find a parking space, there is some attendent charging one money to use the space. Even in places where there can be ample parking, that space is used for something else to make revenue (like renting space for performances or promotions).
