Title: Statistics on the use of English in China - are there any?
Post by: Calach Pfeffer on March 09, 2021, 08:55:41 PM
Any decent reports or overviews?

We know English is on the way out. It'll take a long time to see it off, decades maybe. But "education reform" is on the horizon. Meanwhile, any reliable, no "attach great importance" descriptions of how it is used currently?

That I'm aware of, this is the only publication

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236986651_The_statistics_of_English_in_China

includes tables

Frequency in the use of English among respondents who had studied English  (https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Frequency-in-the-use-of-English-among-respondents-who-had-studied-English_tbl1_236986651)
The self-rated proficiency in spoken English of respondents who had studied English  (https://www.researchgate.net/figure/The-self-rated-proficiency-in-spoken-English-of-respondents-who-had-studied-English_tbl3_236986651)
The reported proficiency in reading English among those who had studied English  (https://www.researchgate.net/figure/The-reported-proficiency-in-reading-English-among-those-who-had-studied-English_tbl2_236986651)

Note: these figures distilled from a survey published in 2006!!!

I'm hearing talks of removing English from the list of mandatory courses in certain levels.. It's apparently under discussion this year.
