Title: Forgotten Film Finds: We Speak Your Name!
Post by: moon over parma on June 16, 2007, 06:01:51 PM
This is the thread for remembering films you saw that nobody else seems to remember (at least enough for it to be a topic of normal discussion).

My first pic is MAD MAGAZINE PRESENTS UP THE ACADEMY! (1980)

Ingredients:
Humor so quirky and odd that an embarassed MAD magazine publically disowned the film shortly after its release.
the late Tom Poston channeling Paul Lynde.
Pre KARATE KID Ralph Macchio as a mafioso's kid.
Barbara Bach looking hot and smoking pot
a killer soundtrack featuring The Modern Lovers, Blondie and Ian Hunter.
a pre-rehab Robert Downey, Jr. (his father directed the film)
It's so bad it's actually good.

LE PETIT CON (The Little Shmuck)  French movie about a pseudo-intellectual teenager, such a hateful portrayal it has to be an autobiography.  i screamed with laughter throughout it... and have never found it since.

THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF MIGHTY MOUSE  Animated Saturday morning fair by Ralph Bakshi, noted for the Fritz the Cat movies.  A wolf in sheep's clothing: all kinds of adult, DARK humour stitched into it.  You can't find it anywhere.

MM...first seen in the 30s/40s....later (briefly) revived somewhere around the late 70s.  A selections DVD is available from www.moviesunlimited.com  and, of course, Amazon.com also has a choice of MM "bests" (but usually only from private sellers).

"Ghenghis Khan"...about GK...starred Omar Sharif and Telly Savalas.  And the Chinese Emperor was portrayed with girt long nails!!  He could have them, since he never did anything for himself!!!  A sign of wealth and power, back in the day!......and I can't find a copy for love nor money  asasasasas asasasasas

When I had glandular fever as a teenager I had to stay in bed for 6 weeks - boring as hell and of course it happened during the holidays, so no time off school!  The ABC ran a whole series of the Deanna Durbin movies and I ended up liking them.

Haven't seen or heard of them since.

I remember being allowed to stay up late to watch Caroll Burnett.  I can still remember some of the characters...Tim Conway flashing his panda and Harvey Korman in drag and Caroll as Nora Desmond..."I'm ready for my close-up Max."

Pic # 2:

Otto Preminger's LSD-tastic musical-comedy SKIDOO
(http://www.greylodge.org/gpc/images/skidoo.jpg)
Mob hitman Jackie Gleason is in hiding with his wife Carol Channing
until his bos, GOD (Groucho Marx) calls on him to whack imprisoned stool pidgeon Mickey Rooney. So, while papa hitman is away, his hot daughter is out hanging with pot-smoking peacenicks like John Phillip Law. Her mom joins in on the fun while mob torpedo Frankie Avalon has to go after Papa hitman since Papa Hitman can't bring himself to kill the stoolie when he has a moment of peace-lovin' clarity from licking an acid-laced envelope from his hound dog cellmate Austin Pendleton. GOD kidnaps Papa hitman's daughter, the mom and the hippies set out on boats to raid GOD's yacht in the name of peace and love, and using LSD in the prison lunch Papa Hitman and his cellmate escape to save Papa Hitman's daughter. The film ends with GOD smoking pot on a boat done up in some Krishna getup.
I couldn't make this up if I tried. Music by Harry Nilsson. Eye-socket burning nightmare courtesy of a nearly nude Carol Channing singing and trying to seduce Frankie Avalon.  Paramount Pictures released it. It has not appeared on American home video in any legal way, shape or form. My copy actually comes from Australian TV. So bad it's good. You will find yourself beating your head against the wall to get the theme out of your head.

Tsui Hark didn't have anything to do with MR. VAMPIRE, but yeah: gotta love the jiang shr. In Taiwan you could watch dozens of those films on television during the month of the ghost festival.

I have never ordered from that company, so I would definitely appreciate a PM once your transaction is completed and if you recommend or don't recommend their service.

One of the many hats I carry on the show that I've been working on is researching films: who owns them, if they have a valid copyright (if they don't; and if they are in the public domain then we can screen them as a part of our show), where to find prints, etc., so It's par for the course in finding films for me, and I'm happy to share what I can with people who appreciate it.

I haven't used the serivices of ioffer, but they are offering it cheaper than the previous one - and you might be able to actually get your order through:

http://www.ioffer.com/i/GENGHIS-KHAN-1965-DVDR-OMAR-SHARIF-TELLY-SAVALAS-15279376

This is a DVD-R, so it's from a collector.

This is a VCD, and may possibly be of better quality than the DVD R (I assume this since the image used for the DVD-R is clearly the VCD cover)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230142176038&ih=013&category=617&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1

It appears that the VCD comes from a release in the Philippeans. The seller is located in the U. S. E-bay I have used for other items, and never been ripped off. The price is the cheapest to date, too.

BUGSY MALONE.

Factors:
It stars two of the top teen actors of 1970s America (Jody Foster & Scott Baio).
An entire cast of pre-teens and teens playing adults: mostly 20s era mobsters and molls.
Foot peddle cars.
Automatic weapons that shoot pies.
Said pies KILL.
Paul Williams' score.
Every male character lip synchs to Paul Williams, and thus SOUND like Paul Williams.
Epic in its costumes and intricate set design.
It's like COTTON CLUB meets JAMES AT 15.
So bad it's good.

Batman Begins is the best Batman film by a mile.

Anyhow, a good obscure film:

Deja Mort

Saw this in Paris and loved it, but nobody I know has seen it.  It's a bit like Boogie Nights but more centred around drugs than porn.  Probably too accessible/american-style for those who love french cinema for its snob value.

I really want to see #4. None of the original (superior) French TAXI films ever received any form of distribution in the United States. I picked up the first film on Hong Kong VCD in New York's Chinatown back in 1998. I picked up part 2 (and replaced the VCD of part 1 with the DVD) in Taiwan. I picked up the DVD for part 3 in South Korea. I'm waiting for a disc of part 4 with English subtitles.

The Innocents starring Deborrah Kerr. Totally scared the bejesus out of me as a girl. As it did thirty years later.

The other one is a story set in a European country controlled by a so called Christian puritanical sect. I forget the title but I can recall Chopin's nocturns which kinesthetically took me into the space and made me tearful for weeks.

Speaking of Deborah Kerr, at least I think it was her with Robert Mitchum, in "The Sundowners", an early attempt by Hollywood to make an Australian movie.

Didn't see that one, George. Would have liked to just to compare it with the Chips Raffetty original. By the way. Have a lovely time at 'home' and give mummy lots of pots of tea. No tea bags!! Come back safe and sound. That is, remember the Dees might topple you over soon.

By the way, still finding my way around the bar after eating the fatted calf,( and having to drink five flat beers). The spelling nazi wasn't there, I'm sure. And who is making that buzzing noise outside the Ladies?

I remember seeing Jedda when I was very young - Australia's first colour feature film (not that it made any difference - I saw it on B&W TV!) and it was the 1st Australian film to be shown in Cannes. A young Aboriginal girl brought up in an enclosed white world.

But I would really like to get my hands on "One night the moon" plus Rabbit Proof Fence.

"One night the moon" is exceptionally good - with Paul Kelly and Kelton Pell, Ruby Hunter.  Music by Paul Kelly and Uncle Kev Carmody.  And if you want to hear guitars that can talk - you need to sit round a campfire one night with Uncle Kev!!

Man Bites Dog. Belgian indie film about a serial killer who hires a film crew to document his daily life. Brutal stuff but also laced with wickedly black humor.

Highway 61. Canadian movie about a smalltown barber coerced into smuggling drugs into the The US by a fugitive roadie.

The Ninth Configuration. Adaptation of a William Peter Blatty novel about an insane asylum for veterans. Stacy Keach is brilliant as the head of the hospital.

I really don't remember the title. THE HANDMAID'S TALE sounds like the film based on Margret Attwood's novel. Never saw the film but loved the book. The film I'm thinking of was made about five to ten years before Attwood's book was published. It was never released through the commercial chain cinemas and shown only in the State theatres,(Oz speak for Art's Council).

Just be careful. The IMDB is rife with errors that could easily be fact-checked by watching a movie. Some movies are listed more than once as if they were different movies, etc. Use it as a rough guide. It's more reliable for mainstream films, but foreign (i. e. non-English) and fringe films - it's 100% of the time hit-or-miss.

Also they are very, very, VERY hesitant to correct their mistakes, despite people giving them actual proof (i. e. screenshots of actual credits) or call sheets. Really.

THE LAST MATCH (1990)

This is the GREATEST "Pro-football team takes on a central American prison" film ever made.

Fighting Sullivans.....5 brothers who enlist and insist upon being given the same tour of duty

Shanghai Ghetto......Jewish refugees from the camps

and in a lighter note----

Flight of Dragons......magic is dying, and so are the dragons of this world....

Casino Royale....the original....a spoof of the Bond films, with David Niven as Bond, 007

Operation Petticoat.....a pink submarine in the Pacific....with women aboard!  (The progenitor of Down Periscope)

Batteries Not Included.....aliens invade a soon-to-be-demolished-for-big-business-venture family-owned restaurant and apartment building

several classic cartoons from the olde days (1930s)as well as Fractured Flickers, (animated) The Hobbit, Caligula (unrated version), Left Behind, The Robe, The Story of Ruth, Time Bandits, The Dark Crystal

The Peanut Butter Solution. It was really old when I was about 12. This kid loses his hair - puts this peanut butter mixture on it and it grows like wild fire. He get stolen and they use his hair to make paint brushes.

Weird. I remember liking it though.  oooooooooo

Ah. Canuxploitation. I never read the book it was based on but remember renting the VHS twenty years ago.

I'm with LT on this. Mel Brooks makes movies that can actually make me laugh, which is something most of the incompetent  bqbqbqbqbq "comedies" produced in Hollywood fails to do.

Here is another one: Mad Dog City. With Jeff Goldblum and Richard Dreyfuss. I recommend it.

Midnight Run with Robert Deniro and Charles Grodin.

I think the fact that it was an action-comedy keeps it off the radar for some people, when compared to films where the comedy and action are not so balanced. Definitely the last good film Grodin did, imo, and the only good comedy Deniro has been invovled in.

The last belly-achingly good comedy I saw was ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY. Good comedies have come around since then, but none that had me holding my ribs in joyous pain from laughing so much.

I spent the last 16 hours (off an on: with sanity breaks) sitting in front of ancient, 16mm, manual, hand-cranked editing spools repairing damaged perforations on a 16mm television print of the film SKATETOWN U. S. A. so we can run it through a film chain and use it on our show.

It's the first non-public domain film we can show. Of course we had to contact a local university to be able to transfer the print to video since the station hasn't had a film chain since the seventies (about the time this film was made); yet they still had some treasures on 16mm lurking in their library (thus how this little gem was discovered).

The cast has the primo seventies-era American television crop: Flip Wilson, Billy Barty (as Wilson's dad!!!), Scott Baio, Ron Palillo (as a gang-banging, bearded roller disco thug!), Ruth Buzzi, Maureen McCormick (ever wanted to see Marsha Brady in a tube top and hot pants? This film grants your wish), "the Unknown Comic," and the lovely Judy Landers.

It should be noted that the film was scripted by THE original Michael Meyers: Nick Castle.(http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/f/fa/MichaelMyers.jpg)

I think this was also Patrick Swayze's cinematic debut.

Its director was responsible for the cinematic epics BLACKENSTEIN and WHAM! BAM! THANK YOU, SPACEMAN!

Last I checked, this was never released on home video in any legal capacity in North America.

Megaforce - total 80s camp with flying motorcycles and all!! Groovy soundtrack by Jerrold Immel who wrote the theme to the TV show Dallas.

Godzilla - any Japanese Godzilla film! I own them all on DVD, prefer the older man in suit onez!

Chinese Ghost Story 1 & 3 (not exactly forgotten but nice finds if you like Chinese ghost films)

Runaway - Tom Selleck as the good guy, check; Gene Simmons (KISS) as the bad guy, check; what more do you need?

Quigley Down Under & High Road To China - both Selleck "masterpieces".

If you're into kung fu films -

Pedicab Driver - Sammo's finest film, ever.
Killer Constable - Shaw Bros goodness, very dark film.
One Armed Boxer - Jimmy Wang Yu, "lost" film.
Human Lanterns - Shaw Bros. wuxia/horror film, great stuff.
Enter The Fat Dragon - Sammo does Bruce Lee, best Lee impersonation/homage ever.
Killer Meteors - Jimmy Wang Yu vs Jackie Chan, 1 of the few films Jackie plays a villain!

I'm struggling to remember any of the films when a man wasn't in a suit (I am ignoring the American abortion from 1998 or so).

Great film. Beg to differ though. Sammo's finest thesping is PAINTED FACES, and EIGHT TAELS OF GOLD running a distant second. However, if you want the total package (actor/director/action choreographer) I place PEDICAB DRIVER and EASTERN CONDORS hand-in-hand at the top.

Horrible movie! ahahahahah You admit you're a fan of MEGAFORCE (count me out on that! I'll take CANNONBALL RUN for a dose of Hal Needham mayhem) so I'm surprised you didn't mention the Wang Yu/Chan sci-fi kung fu goofiness of Kevin Chu Yen-ping's FANTASY MISSION FORCE or their WILD GEESE/ LA FEMME NIKITA/ BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ/BAD BOYS (the Sean Penn flick, not that Fresh Prince trash) pilfering cinematic milkshake known as ISLAND OF FIRE!

GINO (Godzilla In Name Only) wrecked most Americans perceptions of Godzilla.  I don't remember there being an "official" guide to being forgotten, just thought I'd put these out there for fun.

Extremely difficult to find until recently (2004 or 05) when a copy of the Japanese TV version was discovered and released on bootleg DVD.  Don't be confused with the awesomeness that is OAST (One Armed Swordsman Trilogy) which is easily available in boxset form. See - http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/kungfu/onearmedboxer/onearmedboxer.html (http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/kungfu/onearmedboxer/onearmedboxer.html).  Again I don't see an "official" guide to "lost".

It was on VHS under the dubious name THE SCREAMING TIGER in the eighties (in the states).

For me, Jackie Chan hasn't made a good film since DRUNKEN MASTER II in 1994.

Before KILLER METEORS he played a villain in the film POLICE WOMAN. It was pre-eye widening operation and his character has a big mole on his face (fake, of course).  I think it was from 1975.

Correct, but he also played a rapist rickshaw driver in 1974's All In The Family. A role for which he is highly regretful

Depending on which one you had, there is a film titled that with JWY or OAB might have been released under that AKA which was wrong.  They currently are and have been separate films.  I have them both on DVD, and ST on VHS also.

Incorrect. He wasn't a rapist in that film. Nor a vilain. I have the film on my shelf. I take it you read that Jeff Yang "biography" on Chan and that's where this misinformation comes from.

ALL IN THE FAMILY is a lunar new year comedy from around '75ish. Chan's part is very small. He plays a coolie who gets seduced by a married woman. NO rape. No villainy. Sammo Hung is in the film as a rude rickshaw driver.  Sammo is in it for about 2 minutes, Chan for 5 and he gets nekkid along with his female co-star.

In a featured capacity (i. e. not doing the stuntboy "run in and get thrown around for a second, blink-and-miss-it spot") Chan has only played a notable villain in two films. ALL IN THE FAMILY is not one of 'em.

Nah, This is the ONE-ARMED BOXER. To further verify this I compared it to my Mandarin language, Korean subtitled copy I picked up in Incheon, South Korea in 1998. I know my Wang Yu, bro. All that's missing is the Shaw Bros. logo.

Decurso references DEAD-ALIVE, which is the cut (even in its "uncut version" it's missing scenes) North American name of BRAINDEAD. bfbfbfbfbf

I vote for MEET THE FEEBLES. Totally 180 from the family-friendly fare Jackson has been producing for a while now. It's THE MUPPET SHOW in hell. Gotta love it. uuuuuuuuuu

I own a movie called Kung Fu Zombie.  Obviously very cheaply made, but fantastic.  I read a review in which it was compared to Evil Dead and I wholeheartedly agree.

Also, I'm not sure if it would be considered forgotten, but Showdown in Little Tokyo is one I've never heard anyone talking about, and it should definitely be watched.  I wish Brandon Lee had been able to make more movies :(

His other horror-fu classic is KUNG FU FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE. Not as great as KUNG FU ZOMBIE, but almost as much fun.

Indonesian horror and action films rock my world. Classics like VIRGINS FROM HELL (http://youtube.com/watch?v=uhwrfWrMdiE), WITCH WITH FLYING HEAD, anything with Barry Prima (http://youtube.com/watch?v=y7ukhuJyPSc), etc. More bang for their lowly buck. bfbfbfbfbf
