Title: Enter the Squeaker
Post by: Escaped Lunatic on August 12, 2019, 02:57:25 PM
We had a scheduled power outage for Saturday from 8 am until noon.  Considering how hot it's been lately, that was the perfect excuse to go into town and catch an early movie.

On the way back, I hear squeaking just as we reached the stairs of the pedestrian bridge in front of the village.  Not the kind of squeaking one gets out of a rat, but instead that very special squeaking only made by young kittens.

On a planter next to the stairs, there was a tiny little kitten squeaking quite loudly.  This presented a dilemma.  All my prior experiences with tiny kittens involved having a mommy cat to take care of them.  There was also the possibility that a mommy cat was moving her kittens and this was either the first in the new location or the last one awaiting pickup.  We decided to wait and see what happened.

Four hours later, my daughter became aware of the kitten and immediately went to check it out.  There were no signs of a mommy cat or any litter mates.  The poor little squeaker had been abandoned - probably by someone who didn't spay a cat and didn't want any kittens. ffffffffff

My daughter brought it (gender is so hard to determine on very young kittens) back and then she and my wife took our new friend to the vet for a quick look.  I was hoping the vet could keep the kitten for a few days, but tiny kittens require multiple feedings per day, from early morning to late evening, and the vet didn't have anyone staying late.  The official vet guess of the age was 2 weeks.

We've now got vet-approved goat milk for the kitten.  Feeding via syringe resulted in more milk on the outside of the kitten than the inside, so my wife ran by the vet yesterday to get a kitten sized baby bottle.  The kitten really likes that.

Stripy Emperor still isn't quite sure what to do about having another cat in the house (he's annoyed enough that my daughter's cat is here for the summer), so has been spending a lot of time hiding in the master bedroom.  My daughter's cat showed a little interest and then started ignoring the kitten.

So far, no name has been assigned.  Little Squeaker is being used as a temporary name.  My suggestion of EBC (for Emergency Backup Cat) was rejected.

Yesterday my wife told me to listen closer to our squeaky ball of cuteness.  There was a very faint clicking sound.  After listening very carefully, I could tell it correlated to a slight vibration.  The sound was a proto-purr, still under development.

My squeaky explorer has been busy.  First, a small grey rectangular plastic bin was a secure enough container.  I warned my wife the kitten would get over the wall soon.  My wife declared we had plenty of time.  10 minutes later, the kitten was over the wall.

This resulted in a larger red plastic bin replacing the gray one.  The walls were significantly higher.  My daughter gave Little Squeaker some stuffed animals to nuzzle up against.  I warned that the stuffed platypus was in a position to facilitate an easy escape, but my wife was quite firm in stating that this wouldn't be a problem.  Yesterday morning, the kitten escaped via platypult. ahahahahah

I removed the platypus and warned my wife the our squeaky explorer would soon be able to get out unassisted.  My wife told me that this wouldn't happen any time soon and that having the bin closed up inside Stripy Emperor's palace would keep the kitten from getting far in the unlikely event of an escape from the bin.

Last night, with a quiet plop followed by a squeak the wall was proven to no longer be sufficient containment.  Happily, the bars of the palace were just under 3.5 cm apart and the squeaky end of Little Squeaker can't fit through anything narrower than about 3.6 cm.  Then my little squeaky escape artist figured out that the corners had a 4 cm gap and promptly went plop (SQUEAK!) onto the floor.

The platypus, some more stuffed animals, and one well feed Little Squeaker have been transferred to the old rabbit cage.  I measured everything and none of the gaps exceed 3.2 cm.

For now, His Majesty will hiss and then stalk off if Little Squeaker is brought too close.  So far, there's been no other hostility like he's shown to my daughter's cat.  Those two will try to swat each other by reaching through bars.  My daughter and her cat go back to university in about a week.  That should allow His Majesty to relax a bit so I work on convincing him that Little Squeaker will be an ok addition to the household.

I was getting concerned.  Little Squeaker was quite capable of ejecting considerable volumes of liquids, but was lacking in the bqbqbqbqbq department.

The vet said it might take quite some time.  Online sources agreed.  However, once this exceeded 10 days, even my lovely wife finally decided to pressure the vet into checking.  Turns out our little furry friend was indeed seriously constipated and the vet managed to remove the blockage using a cotton swap.

Although this was a trauma for our Squeaky Conqueror, the timing worked out well.  I was nearly done shopping at Carrefour when the vet was done with the kitten, so my wife brought the kitten over to join the expedition.  I guess the security guy at the front gate didn't notice that the oddly shaped purse my wife was carrying was a cat purse. ahahahahah

One bit of worrying news.  We found 1 flea on the kitten.  I don't know if this was accidentally picked up in the vet's office or if it's been around longer.  It's dead now, but we need to to a thorough check to make sure there aren't any more.

Would you like me to send you a Crazy Cat Lady starter kit?  It comes with 6 kittens. ahahahahah

The good news - the vet uncorked things on Little Squeaker's back end.  The bad news.  It's been a bit of a  bqbqbqbqbq-storm ever since.

Litter box training has begun, but That Which Squeaks doesn't seem to understand the concept. kkkkkkkkkk

Sadly, Serenity got shot down (damned Reavers!).

So, after much bloodshed polite discussion, the name the 3 humans finally agreed upon was presented to His Majesty, who decided that this whole thing was taking too much attention from him, so he immediately agreed.

Pandora Kitty, Assistant Backup Cat to Stripy Emperor.  Informally, just Pandora.  We're all sure she's full of surprises (some good, some maybe not so good).

The name was selected on Sunday.  Coincidentally, Pandora decided to ignore all prior attempts to train her and started using the litter box all on her own at about the time her name was assigned.

Once she's a little bigger, she'll get promoted from Assistant Backup Cat to Backup Cat. ahahahahah

Slowly, but surely, she's getting bigger.  She was just over 100 grams when we got her.  She's now over 800 grams, which is still pretty small.

It took so long to convince Stripy Emperor that toes were not kitty snacks.  Pandora things fingers and toes are both delicious. bibibibibi

She's learned to purr properly, but hasn't gotten into meowing yet.  She still squeaks, but mostly in protest.

Her fur and markings both remain unusual.  The whiskers curl forward, which is bizarre.  Add in the alien look she has on her face , and I'm regretting not checking for a small spacecraft near where we found her.  Sadly, it's near a trash collection and sorting area, so if there was one, someone recycled it.

Based on being found on August 10th and being about 2 weeks old, Pandora's birthday has been officially recorded as July 27th.

Today she's 6 months old, super-playful, and thinks fingers are the best snack food. agagagagag

She also has no idea about the vet visit planned now that she's old enough for the surgery ahahahahah

She's going to get a small delay because of the virus issue, but we've already let the vet know we can bring her in on short notice.

The Didi driver tried to make us put Pandora in the trunk of his car. ffffffffff asasasasas ffffffffff

I taxi cruising past solved that problem.  For the trip home, my lovely wife called the new Didi driver to make sure he wouldn't be an idiot.  Happily, he was also a cat owner.

I suggested buying a new cone of shame.  My wife told me that would be wasteful.  Keeping the existing cones on her proved impossible, so she had to go back to the vets and buy one (for about the same amount as a 1-way trip to the vet office ahahahahah).

Pandora was freaked out and also seemed to have sudden sharp pains during the first 48 hours.  After that. she began to calm down and was primarily annoyed by the cone.  We had to keep Stripy Emperor away from her.  At first, she smelled different due to the antiseptics applied to the stitched area, so he thought she was an intruder (the vet warned us of this).  Later, he wanted to be helpful and lick the wound for her.

We left her coned for 8 days, but by day 4 she was doing her best to act like nothing happened.

Now, all that's left is a thin line where she was sliced open (dissolving stitches rock!) on one edge of a shaved area.  It's getting fuzzier, but she'll need another month or two for all the fur to regrow properly.

6:30 this morning (I normally wake up at 7):

My wife's one true love cell phone somehow fell off the bed and onto the floor.

Stripy Emperor and Pandora were startled. aoaoaoaoao aoaoaoaoao

I felt Stripy launch from his position near my feet.  I'm not sure where Pandora was when the phone fell, but they ended up on the floor on opposite sides of the bed with Pandora making the weird noises she makes when she's seriously distressed.

I had to turn on the lights to successfully capture her without risking getting mauled.  I finally managed to scoop her up and wrap her up under a sheet to let her calm down.  It took about 5 minutes to get that accomplished.

Turned off the lights to try to get the last little bit of sleep.  Stripy waited a few minutes, then walked over to check on Pandora.  She promptly freaked out again.

My wife sent Stripy to the living room.  Putting him in his palace wasn't an option.  Daughter's cat, Champagne, would knock over everything in the living room and dining area if she wasn't kept locked in the palace at night.  Pandora took a few more minutes to calm down again.

I just started to drift off again.  Stripy started meowing and jumping up to hit the doorknob.  Finally he got let back into the bedroom and Pandora didn't go off the deep end again.  I then got an amazingly uninterrupted 5 whole minutes of sleep before it was time to get up. ananananan

Stripy Emperor has mostly given up on using his Seat of Judgement atop the his palace.  He likes to sit there and judge the mere humans below who slave away for him.  Champagne has short legs, but is very good at climbing.  When she'd not locked in the palace, she tried to monopolize the Seat of Judgement.  Pandora hasn't developed the climbing skills to get up there, yet.

Stripy decided on a new and improved Seat of Judgement atop the air conditioner.  The AC is pretty much cylidrical and is a bit over 170 cm tall.  He's got a good spot where he can leap to it.  There's no way to climb it, so he's had it all to himself, until a few days ago.

Pandora finally succeeded in leaping to the top of the AC.  Stripy was annoyed.  Everyone else was impressed.  I think Pandora wants to spend some time showing that she too can judge the human slaves.  Stripy Emperor grudgingly agreed to promote her from just being an Assistant Backup Cat to being a full Backup Cat.

Pandora did something else.  The AC is left powered up, but shut down.  In addition to the remote, it can be turned on and controlled by a touch panel near the top.  When Pandora decides to come down, she lets her front paws slide down the side of the AC.  Somehow, she manages to keep turning it on.  We had to kill the power to the AC to keep her from turning it on every time she decides to take a break from judging us.

Pandora's First Kill

Pandora is becoming a mighty hunter.  Despite her prey being about 15 times heavier, Pandora slowly and carefully stalked, waiting for just the right moment to strike.  As the prey moved onto a slippery surface, Pandora lunged and took her victim down.  It was Total Victory for Pandora!

On the other hand, my beautiful daughter, who was walking on the freshly mopped tiles, was less than happy to have one foot knocked out from under her.  This resulted in a firm impact between my daughter's posterior and the floor.  Dignity was an additional casualty.   ahahahahah

Egg Tart kept showing up less and less, so the planned capture and vet trip never happened.  We haven't seen him at all for at least 2 weeks. ananananan ananananan ananananan

But our door is being guarded more vigilantly than before.  The neighbor's orange cat with the tabby striped head and solid orange body has been hanging out more and more.  He's there every morning and every afternoon.  The striped orange cat drops by occasionally and other cats sometimes appear once every week or two, but the one with the solid orange body seems intent on settling in.

Now we need to think of a name for him.  The neighbor doesn't seem very attached (he's offered to give us either or both orange cats), so we're going to have to start planning for him to take a nice vacation at the vet's office.

Spent a few hours discussing names with my wife.  Since daughter is now off at uni, the cat managed to avoid a food name. ahahahahah

The Lions that often guard buildings are typically either stone lions or bronze lions.  Since this cat is now our official door guard (and is orange), he ended up with Bronze Cat (Tong Mao) as his name.

We were busy on Saturday.  He was around Sunday early morning, but had some important cat things to do until mid afternoon.  Then he showed up meowing for a snack.  Since Champagne is still here, so is the cat backpack.  Before poor Bronze Cat knew what was happening, he was bagged and heading out to the street to catch a car.

After a few minutes of distressed meowing, he calmed down.  Even at the vet's, he was very cooperative and seemed much more interested in being petted than escaping.

The anti-parasite medication we've been giving him is more for external parasites.  Vet called to let us know that he's been properly fixed and that he's got intestinal worms of some sort.  That will be taken care of while he's recovering from the surgery and getting his first round of all vaccinations.  We should be able to collect him on Saturday.

Between visiting the bank and catching the new Mulan movie on Saturday, we stopped off to visit Bronze Cat at the vet's office.  He's recovering well and was desperate for some good petting.  My wife will be collecting him from the vets later this afternoon.  He's been fixed, had first round of vaccines, been dewormed, and also had a bit of an ear clipping to identify him as a non-breeding outdoor kitty.

Much to my surprise, we was even up for a tummy rub.  Most cats will lure you in for that, only to try to remove your arm, but he was more than happy to just lay there and purr away.  Stripy Emperor acts the same, but Pandora alternates between wanting tummy rubs vs wanting to eat any hand that gets too close.  Champagne considers any attempt to touch her stomach to be an excuse to deploy all her claws and teeth.

My beautiful daughter is back for the holidays and has good news.  It seems that the "keep you all locked up in dorms" restrictions are being relaxed, so she'll be able to rent a place just outside of campus - and is taking Champaign back to school with her in about a week.

Stripy Emperor is sad that daughter won't be staying, but is pleased to not have Champaign as a semi-permanent house guest.

As Stripy Emperor's Public Relations director, it falls upon me to make the following announcement:

Although the village has its share of unleashed small dogs, semi-feral cats, and those far more dangerous invisible monsters that only cats can see, Bronze Cat and the fully stripped orange cat a few houses over have never suffered more than minor scratches and bruises.

Bronze Cat was on duty as usual all of last week.  He didn't complain of any problems.  On Saturday morning, a large patch of missing fur on his shoulder was noted.  Closer examination revealed 2 deep puncture wounds.  Bronze Cat was rushed to the hospital to be attended to by Stripy Emperor's personal physician.

The bad news is that the wound was infected.  The good news is that Bronze Cat should recover.  He should be coming home by the end of this week, but his convalescence may be extended.

When asked if it was a snake, a dog, a cat, or some new and more dangerous variety of invisible monster, Bronze Cat replied "My job is to guard the front door, not to brag about how I do it.  The intruder is dead.  I'm embarrassed that I was injured and I want to get back to work as soon as possible."

Stripy Emperor realizes that it could be several months before Bronze Cat is fully recovered.  In the meantime, Stripy Emperor has ordered all doors and windows to be reinforced.  In recognition of Bronze Cat's bravery, he is now promoted from Guardian of the Front Door to Guardian of All Entrances.  When Bronze Cat returns home, he will be permitted to join Stripy Emperor and Pandora living indoors.

The imperial cat doctor say Bronze Cat's recovery is going very well.  The infection was deep, but not so deep as she originally feared.  It looks like he'll be able to come back home in another day or two.

Arrangements are being considered for how to let him initually rest quietly - away from the other cats.  Champagne just departed for university (along with daughter ananananan).  Then comes the fun part of explaining how all 3 of them need to live together without arguing about it.

Taking a cat to the vet is like taking a car to a mechanic.  There's always a large chance of having to do a repeat trip.

Poor Bronze Cat's wound got worse, and he also seems to have bladder stones.  So, one more week in the vet's office.  We finally got him back on the 19th.  I just hope he gets to stay home this time.

All 3 sometimes come sleep in the bed with us, but Pandora is there almost every night.  Sometimes Bronze Cat and/or Stripy want to be in the bedroom and sometimes they want to run around the rest of the house.  Once it's cool enough to turn off the AC, we'll be able to leave the bedroom door open.  It has a gate to keep daughter's dog out and her cat sleeps in one of the palaces so we don't get midnight cat fights.
