Tonight, Olympic-less, I finally had time to go out and wander the streets. Buried in the playlist on my iPOD is Peter Gabriel's "We Do What We're Told (Milgram's 37)" but it popped up in shuffle mode tonight. Eureka!

The relevant lyrics at the end of the song per the Internets:

one doubt
one voice
one war
one truth
one dream

But I could've sworn Gabriel sang,

One doubt
One voice
One world
One truth
One dream

It's a semi-obscure song that Gabriel wrote in ?homage? to the original 37 nasty responders in Stanley Milgram's original experiments. It's Orwellian in sound and (lack of) fury.

The genesis of the song can be found in the middle of the article here:

Have Zhang Yimou and Peter Gabriel ever worked together, anybody know?

I am very much into Pink Floyd's Echoes nowadays. Any Floyd fans here?

The Floyd are God.

but right now I am listening to Devo, duty now for the future, to put me in the mood for my students next week. Later tonight, Wish You Were Here.

Not literally. Stay away. But Pink Floyd's track, ok?

I do love DEVO, regardless of the bitter pill that is "Devo 2.0".

Booji & General Boy salute you, Mr. N.

Black Sabbath

I have some mash ups that a friend put together as a 'concept album.' Every track uses Black Sabbath and he mashes the songs up with seriously weird companion tracks. Not all of the mash ups work, but most of them do, with hilarious results. He used "War Pigs" a few times. One  mash up uses the slow, brooding opening and it's looped. He then took bunch of soundbites of Wilford Brimley and dropped them in! It starts off flat out funny, just recognizing Wilford Brimley's voice, but then it starts to get warped. It goes from the kind, grandfatherly Brimley to this diabolical Wilford Brimley, cussing up a storm and threatening to kill someone. It builds up to this Dennis Hopper, Blue Velvet-ish crescendo that made me laugh so hard I smile thinking about it. It is without a doubt the second greatest mash up, right behind the one some guy made that took wrestling announcer Jim Ross and recontextualzied it so he was rapping about his ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgpa6hjlUbY
