Hey Fozz yes you can get a bus from Hubin Nan Lu station downtown in Xiamen it leaves at 9.10 or so and takes 3.5 hours to Hukeng village. The guy from the guest house met us at the station and took us 10 mins on his motorbike into the village. We paid 100RMB a night for the room which was basic but okay.Then we hired a driver with a minibus to take us around the tulou villages the next day. You also have to pay an entrance fee to the village of 90 RMB>I have some more info on the virtual tourist website http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/22c84/1003f8/I would avoid the "king of the Tulous" which costs an extra 25 RMB because it was nasty tawdry and overcrowded.
