Why is SZ so expensive .....
« on: July 10, 2009, 07:42:52 PM »
This is strictly a whining post ....

So so so so tired of being gouged for drinks and food here in Shenzhen (especially the Shekou area).  WTF ...... ¥25 for a Tsing Tao (bottle)?  That's a helluva mark-up.

Robbery I tell you!

Jack and Coke = ¥35 ... hell, the Jack is copy-Jack ... not even the real thing.

Cheeseburger = ¥50 .... UGH!!!!!

I can't speak to SZ, but most of the cities I've been to have similar districts, where the foreigners are all rich businesmen with too much money. I'm sure that, as you get around, you'll discover places that cater to your income bracket. Possibly before you run out of money.

You're hanging out in the wrong places. Down some of the side streets near Coastal City are some decent restaurants that are cheap (great Xinjiang restaurant around the corner from Good Friend Health City that has 5 kuai Tsingtao). Even the restaurants by the Poly Theater are too expensive, as long as you don't go there too often. All bars in the city are extremely expensive--the only cheap ones have some serious problems (even I find most of those places a bit dirty and shady).

I've heard about that Xinjiang restaurant but still have no no no idea where it is.  The Good Friend Health City is on Hou Hai road .... I know that .... do you mean down that small street that Ba Shu Fang (sichuan hot pot) sits on?

Yeah,  SK is too damn expensive ..... there is a unofficial set rate for beer and booze that no-one wants to go below.  And that rate is too d*mn high.

i was out last night with my chinese friend and we went to the big marine world ship at shekou.  i never looked at the menu as i needed to take the bill before he did. 2 glasses of beer, gave 100 rmb and got 4 rmb back in change.  i was surprised. must have been good european beer, and of course the upkeep on the ship costs too, and the free live american music and fun dancing and pretty girls and outside away from the smokers,  ...well, it all adds up.

Yokie, I think that's the street for the Xinjiang restaurant. Past the sex shop but before the prostitution shop on the left side. There are also some cheaper bars toward the end of that street...but they're not that friendly.

Thanks.  Any chance you have a pic of the restaurant?  Don't want to wind up in the wrong one .... he he ....

They have a little barbecue outside, can't miss it. I'll ask my friend if he remembers the Chinese name--I'm pretty sure he still goes there a few days a week.

Get lost in some back alleys and find out where the homeys eat.  Some of my best meals in DG cost 5 rmb or less.
