Title: Anyone know about Peihua University in Xi'an?
Post by: reesey2369 on November 30, 2011, 04:24:52 PM
I received an interview offer from the International Exchange Center of Peihua University in Xi'an. Anyone ever heard about it and if it's reputable?

Thanks!

Google gives some 90,000 hits, together with copious detail, so it does seem to exist! 5,000 for an inland uni seems reasonable, but no I don't have any personal knowledge of the place.

I googled the name of the school in Chinese, and turns out it's not actually a univeristy (though they say this in English, an old trick) it's actually a xue yuan 学院 which means college. This means they don't give degrees, I think, just diplomas. Read: diploma mill.

therefore, I wouldn't expect it to be fantastic academic institution, however, that doesn't mean it won't be a good gig for foreign teachers, so perhaps keep an open mind.

xue yuan 学院 which means college. This means they don't give degrees, I think,...

In China, the difference between xueyuan‘s 学院 (College/Institute)  and daxue 大学 (University) is that Universities can grant post-graduate degrees. Public xueyuan's cannot.. That's the distinction in the public sector. The xueyuan's can and do grant 4 year degrees in certain subjects. They also grant 3-year diplomas in other subjects. Private xueyuan's may be limited to 2-3 year certificates and degrees.

I've never been exposed to a forum before. I see where the Saloon aspect comes in. Wild West atmosphere.

But thanks for the input and for keeping an eye out Amonk.  Would never want to be scared off entirely. What's the good in that?

But um...fyi...I'm a woman.

I lived in Xi'an a few years ago, never heard of it.  I work for a xueyuan now, and find it very refreshing compared to a regular uni. But, that really depends on your teaching style.

I taught at technical colleges - a Gong Xue Yuan and a Gao Zhuan- for nearly five years. The courses are more vocationally oriented than universities, but they are just as valid. Some of these colleges get upgraded to university status, as did the two I worked at, once they have employed the requisite number of professors. The other thing you get are students who didn't fit the mould in terms of getting into a uni, but still have definite strengths. For example, my Foreign Trade majors had, in the main, excellent English skills. I'd been led to believe they'd be IELTS 4 at best, but many were pushing 7. A great many came from rural families, and were being put through by siblings working in factories to drag the family out of poverty. These kids were decent and hard working, not to mention appreciative and friendly.
All else was the same as any other public university in terms of pay and conditions.

After looking through Google links it seems to stack up as a credible institution. Seems to have evolved over a long period into a university that offers undergraduate degrees. The fact that it is under the control of the Department of Education at provincial level indicates that it is has official recognition for its qualifications.

Like gonzo and Mimi, I enjoy teaching students at an institution with a technical bias. The students I taught in Baoji (Shaanxi) came from rural backgrounds and had all the qualities outlined by gonzo

Sorry for the confusion, Reesey.  I didn't see any gender indicator under your handle.  I'll try to remember for the future. (Unless you alter your Profile).

Thanks everyone! I guess I should find out how to change my profile. bibibibibi

I've never taught ESL before. I tutored kids and adults in remedial English and Math.

Do you think that this would be a good place to get my feet wet?
