You just have to keep paying the fee?
A China Unicom manager claimed that today for my number. The manager said the number will attract big-ass fees if it is used outside of China, but that basically it is already all set to go. Just make sure there's enough credit. And you don't have to do anything special to make sure it stays active, even if you stay out for several years.
I find this so unexpected that I wonder if it is true. Has anyone had any experience?

I mean, surely you have to activate international roaming and apply some roaming package, right?

As long as the monthly fee is paid, the provider really doesn't care if the phone is inside or outside of China. If you plan to use it outside of China other than for some rare emergency, an international roaming plan is a good idea.

I want it to be able to send and receive SMS from China while outside of China.
I think I might have been misleading people by saying "maintain". I mean "operate".

that's what i did with my number and 6 months in, no problem.
I've had roaming activated for years and it was just fine.
Before leaving, i switched to the cheapest plan available at 8RMB/month and put in 200RMB of credit. IT's useful for my bank accounts, alipay etc.. which all depend on the number.
easy as 1-2-3
