Annoying
« on: May 24, 2017, 07:25:54 AM »
Watching lots of NBC and CBS TV lately thru my
VPN. First three episodes are free without a US cable subscription. In exchange for regular commercials.

Watching two episodes of 60 minutes tonight on CBS (including a Story on Ai Wewei), EVERY FUCKING COMMERCIAL was for the same product - Xeljanz - a drug for arthritis. The commercial runs, and then it runs again. And again. I want to tear the needles of the porcupine that starts and ends the commercial, and I hope the woman in the commercial runs out of the medication and her arthritis doesn't clear up "after two weeks". I've spent more than two weeks seeing this F***ing commercial.

Switched to CBS Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders about young American Tourists abroad who are killed/kidnapped, etc. The commercials changed to car ads and a repeating commercial about Outback Steakhouse (an American-run chain featuring "Australian" cuisine complete with Foster's Lager and an Aussie voice over). US$14.99 for a 4 course meal. By the fifth time I saw this commercial, let's call it Outhouse Steakhouse.

old34, I have a Topfield Video Recorder on which I record all my TV shows except for the News. I don't have the patience to watch ads, so I fast forward them. bfbfbfbfbf There are three half hour M.A.S.H. shows on each night and I am able to watch the first one while the second one is recording and so on. I'd be lost without my recorder which doesn't require tapes or recording sticks ; it is just connected to my TV set. bfbfbfbfbf

I can sympathize.  A few months back, both WalMart and Carrefour kept repeating the same laundry detergent advert over and over again on screens throughout the stores. They finally got a couple other ad contracts so at least it's no longer the same commercial on a continuous loop.

I can't watch regular TV anymore literally when at home because I have no reception and figuratively when on holidays because of the commercials. They drive me insane.

I do watch lots of TV shows - download torrents or watch BBC iPlayer/stream from other sources. There is nothing I can't find and watch. Everything is commercial-free and I can start and stop it at any time I want. I will never own a TV or subscribe to cable again no matter where I live.

I don't hate Texas or churches... but fundamentalist Christians scare the shit out of me, and by far the weirdest/dumbest people I've met in Korea & China have been from Texas.

On the plus side, you know you're vpn is working - you're getting "local" ads

I'd torrent. Torrenting's days are numbered, I think. The big aggregators are going down one by one and not necessarily being replaced. Online piracy checks are going to get "better". The "freedom" of the internet is going to be circumscribed (even more). ISPs are going to be complicit in that. What you download is going to be monitored (more). But for now.... oh yeah, 1080p high def, ad-free video - while you still can.

It's Netflix, isn't it, that's moved into tv and movie production? Their logo's on everything I watch these days. And Amazon? I haven't been paying attention. But if we're lucky, that's the future - high definition video on demand for a subscription, with no ads. And you can subscribe to different services at the same time - just like having different channels on your broadcast tv. That's what made cable tv so unattractive in the past: they attempted to be the be-all and end-all of your tv requirements and instead were a limited, partial selection of what's truly on offer.

True, but it's interesting to note that when my VPN is set to Dallas, I get church commercials and pick-em up truck commercials. When set to L.A. I get L.A. car dealers selling passenger cars and SUVs. And lots of pharmaceutical products, especially Viagra.

That's why living in LA is hard.
