What I did Yesterday
« on: August 01, 2012, 11:57:27 PM »
We often have a lot of photos from people going on holiday and they are great but I'm also interested in the mundane everyday life we all have here.

Yesterday I took my camera with me as I had a typical day for me in the summer.

My summer school classes are not far from my house. I cut through Xu Teli (a teacher of Mao Zedong) Park on my way.

I usually leave early because it's too hot to hurry but that gives me a chance to notice what's around me.

I see this guy most days. I've never seen him sweat. Actually I've never seen him do anything remotely resembling work either.

... But the park is kept pretty well anyway.

Workers are out just after dawn. They really can't do much in the afternoon heat.

As I get to the school, I run into colleagues.

Junior middle school students stuck in summer school hell.

Lunch today is 青椒口味鸭 (duck with green cayenne peppers)

In the afternoon after work it's too hot for anyone to do anything outside, even play.

These stairs are formidable in the heat.

There are some nice views from the top though.

Late dinners are common as we wait for the temperature to come down. It's about 8:30 and the temperature is back down to a reasonable 38ºC so people will be out and about again.

Time for some 烧烤 (bbq)

... And ice cold beer.

It's a school night so back home early.

Hunan food is always good.

It's a small park sitting between two schools that are completely shut down for summer holidays. It's was also 8:30am when I took those and 35ºC already and I live in the 'burbs about a 45 minute drive from downtown.

By the start of the semester it will be full again...... and there will be garbage everywhere.

It certainly is swell that the temp gets down to a reasonable 38 degrees in the evening. My favorite picture is the guy who never sweats. Now there is a smart guy!

Well said! I think "mundane everyday life" in China is exactly what a lot of people come here to see. bjbjbjbjbj

I would like others to post images in this thread.

Take a couple of photos as you go about your day and put them up here in sequence. Use your mobile phone, whatever. Beauty is not necessarily part of it. The garbage, the crowds we pass on a daily basis. We can see how our daily routines differ... or not. We can see the different areas/foods/classes etc. Work day, off day, weekend, shopping... anything. It may seem like a boring common day to you but that's the point. Your common day is not what other people, especially back home, experience.

Not only would this be interesting for me (and many of you, I hope) but it can be a great resource for those thinking about coming to China. A lot of people I meet, think that Shanghai has a lot of big buildings and the rest of China is like Guilin.
