The throw-up icon doesn't do it near as well as I did. Didn't make it to the throne in time. Almost hit the throne from the door. My back muscles are sore, my stomach is tender.
A chinese friend brought over some porridge and a salt egg plus the sweet potato I asked for. In two meals, I have eaten half the porridge and egg, and almost half the sweet potato. Definitely not back to my usual gluttonous portions.
Will go back to school tomorrow. Slept most of today. Heard from another teacher who was also stricken. If 2 got sick, more probably did. Hope the bride and groom didn't eat what we did.

Oh so hijack!!! is upstairs and fluff is here.
Anyway, yesterday spent about 40 mins trying to figure out how to open my computer. Rather with what - somehow during my moving sagas I lost all my tools! Finally, did unscrew what was possible to unscrew. Then spent another 30 mins trying to figure out how to take off the cover - believe me, it wouldn't get off that easily. So, when it was done FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS I CLEANED COMPUTER'S INSIDE FROM DUST. I don't know the heck did that guy last year repair my computer without dusting it. The dust in some places was horrid.
Now I can turn my computer on without any problems. And before - the start button wouldn't work.
I love myself, thankyouverymuch.
PS. it took me another 30 mins to attach the cover back - it wouldn't want to. bibibibibi

LT, yes. You should open up yours and do the same (especially if it's a desktop - the processor part). You'd be amazed how much dust is in there. I even took off the ventilator part and cleaned it as I couldn't reach for the dust under it. Oh well, DIRT that's what it was.

Oh, I get vacations OK, and some odd Days Off, but not in sych with PRC.
New Year's Day, Good Friday, Agricultural Show (1 of the 3 days), Queen's Birthday, 24th May, Cupmatch (two days), Labour Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas and Boxing Days. Well actually, I've at least 3 weeks over Christmas and New Year. AND I may have to take a break for 2 months in the Summer (unpaid, since I"m only a "part-time teacher") if the DoC budget gets too tight.

Personally, the only place I'd ever even consider swimming in China would be the ocean. Pools are swam in (and God knows what else) by 150,000 of your closest friends every day; and since pool chemicals cost money and are a lot of inconvenient trouble, we can just do without them, right? Rivers and other fresh water are just a mess...a nightmare of pollution, raw sewage, parasites, and nasty, nasty bacteria. Like Typhoid. aoaoaoaoao
The ocean may not be a lot better, but at least you got some salt on your side there. And enough volume to kinda thin things out a bit.
The beach season can run from nearly all year in places like Sanya in the deepest south, to July-August in Northeastern cities such as Dalian or Qingdao.

It's almost swimming weather here in Dalian. But the water even here is pretty dirty. I like sitting on the beaches, it feels a bit like being in brighton, but i dunno if i'd swim in it.
For the record, i have swum in the yangtse in wuhan! I dunno if that makes me a nutter or what...

Really long but productive day:
morning classes were great. My troublesome class was amazingly good! Even the Korean student who hates English has been very consistent with the homework and came up with a... BOOK REVIEW! agagagagag
Had a quick lunch with a couple of friends and ran off to afternoon classes. Then 2 hours breaks where I realized I was still hungry. Then evening class.
Went over to see my friend who just came back from a trip. Had MORE food.
Got home just a bit ago and I think I am still hungry!
PS. I haven't had a proper meal in 3 days - ate cookies and danish rolls. I guess 3 days of weird starvation resulted in over-eating!!!

I remember when I, and the group of people I was teaching/travelling with, arrived in India. We were escorted to a school in Delhi where we stayed for 2 nights before heading up to Hardwar. The Delhi school pummelled us with cheese toasties, which we found odd. I think they gave us about 80 of them each. Some people actually *complained* about this! Two months later we would all have given anything for death by toastie...

Can't find the - I was really stupid thread.
I was in a hurry today. My school is at the top of a steep hill. I was teaching a another building part-way up the hill. I had 20 min to get to the school, get online, download 2 documents I e-mailed myself and get them upstairs to the copy room. Mid-term tests for tomorrow morning so important.
I can walk fast when necessary. Of course the stupid docs wouldn't download into word. llllllllll Wanted to open in Chinese. llllllllll Ran up the stairs to the copy room. Got online on their computer with the tech there. He finally got it to open. Walked back down the hill and stopped at the little grocery store. I am too OLD to run up the hill. I was very dizzy once the adrenaline stopped coursing through my veins. DUMB DUMB DUMB.
Supposed to go to a festival (Dean invited us) Couldn't muster the energy to sit through 3 hours of student performances. I also have a ton of marking to do before tomorrow. Of course we weren't invited till this afternoon. I actually wanted to go but ..... I am too old (and fat) to run up the hill. llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll llllllllll

One of the reasons I was worried (about being so dumb), was heart attacks run in my family. Stressing like that isn't smart at my age and weight. It would have been more intelligent to have decided to go to work early and 'beg' the girl to do the copying as a 'rush' and just started the test part way through the first period. By the way, the Russians I know are all lovely, some, not all may look scary but they are lovely.
Whilst sitting in a train station in Harbin, awaiting my train a rather large (very scary looking) Russian guy, with very dark eyes and features as if they have been cut into his face, saw me and being the only other foreign in a sea of chinese faces, made a beeline for me and started talking in very angry russian, the friend I was with at the time luckily knew some russian and spoke with him. He breaks into a chuckle and says 'ah your from Australia how wonderful'. I had the most unreal conversation with him over the next hour before the train goes. It was incredible to exchange ways of life with him.
Also cheeky is Russian and she's lovely...so there.
I have just dyed my hair and for the first time in 18 months it has finally the colour I want so a round on me (except for George who is being rude to Russians)
I don't know why I'm babbling I'm just so happy about my hair. And no I've not being drinking either.

I had the washer seen to some couple of months ago, so I guess the dryer felt slighted. It's going to have to wait till later, since I'm not working at full-load (nor full ca$h) again till September.

Beaver dams are always in the conservation areas. I have seen bears in camp grounds. We had to keep our food inside car etc. The always went to the garbage pails. (this was near Calgary which is near Edmonton!)

It's just dried oats. You can cook it to porridge, but that takes too long. Also gives me flashbacks to my days as a Boy Scout. Being roused from sleep at 5 in the morning to salute the flag and then eat steaming hot greyish sludge while some Scout Master is telling me that today we have to build a wooden tower and then find nettles to make nettle and leek soup for lunch. I hated being a Boy Scout and to this day I really hate nettles.

Fantastic!! Absolutely amazing! See, this is what I like to see. Seriously doing something about a horrible problem. As we all know, we are all braindead zombies who, without even considering the ramifications of our actions, will emulate our favourite actors on the silver screen. Especially Disney movies. For instance, this morning I climbed onto my roof with an anvil and tossed it over the side, with the specific purpose of hitting my annoying neighbour. This is in no way dangerous as we all know that, if a person is struck by an anvil falling from a great height, all that will happen is that a cone shaped bumb will sprout from their head and yellow canaris will fly in a circle around their head.
Likewise, this morning I brought a shovel with me to work. When I encountered the first annoying teenager of the day, I immediately swung and made the heavy shovel blade connect squarely with the offending youths face. True to form, stars appeared and all his teeth fell out to form a small igloo on his tongue.
In my sparetime I also enjoy finding little boys who own Border Collies and then, while the dog is watching, push the boys into wells and walk away, confident in the dogs ability to run off and communicate the distress of the boy to his parents. And who has not found great mirth in serving someone a hotdog and, instead of a sausage, sliding a lit stick of dynamite in the bun. Oh, how funny people do look when their face turns all black and their hair stands out in odd angles.
Cigarettes are disgusting, yes. They smell bad, they make you sick and there is not a single logical, rational defense for why anybody should want to smoke them. Well, that's my opinion anyway. I mean, tar and poison, doesn't sound too yummy in my ears.
Do people actually think that eliminating smoking from movies will have an effect? Smoking bans are being enforced all over the world, the prices of cigarettes keep rising, so why don't they just make the damn things illegal? Oh wait, I forgot, they can't do that and sell their souls to the all powerful Mammon at the same time.
Sorry for the rant. I am just really rather tired of smokers lighting up where they are not supposed to.

We had a rough day yesterday, and decided to treat ourselves to sushi with one of our favourite chefs. Lovely time, good food and better company. The only fly-in-the-ointment was the waiter, who failed to wait on us. He didn't get my drink order right, failed to check us to see if we needed/wanted anything further, and had to be called over (by our chef) to get Hubby another drink. Then he kept us waiting over 30 minutes for the printed bill. I wrote out a check...having deducted the "Service" fee... gave our chef a personal (cash) Thank You, and we left.
The waiter had to flag us down as we were pulling out of the parking lot. I had forgotten to tear out the check to put with the bill. The best "Service" I had all evening.

When you ask for kuaizi and she just looks at you like you were a gibbering lunatic. Finally found one that serves jiaozi and Beijing cao ya. I am so going there on my birthday. Jiaozi, Peking duck followed by Simpsons. But buying jiaozi in some fancy restaurant is just not real jiaozi. Real jiaozi are bought down some dirty alley, in a filthy grease shack where, for your own sanitys sake, it would be advisable not even to contemplate the state of the kitchen. Oh, sometimes I do miss China and, hopefully, that is where I'll be going on holiday next year.

The best Chinese meal I ever had was when we (Hubby and I) were invited to a local Chinese eatery by Chinese friend.
A group of Chinese staff from a local hotel (Mandarin and Cantonese speakers who had to use English to communicate!!) had pre-arranged with the restaurant people for a real Chinese meal...with Hubby and I as "honoured guests". Waay cool....and super delicious.
Sadly, that restaurant is now defunct, and our friend has moved on (back home).
Oh, sometimes I do miss China and, hopefully, that is where I'll be going on holiday next year.

Not yet, no. In a couple of years, when my Chinese has improved and this quite boring job gets to be too much, I would consider going back to teach in China. For now, going to Zhongguo on holiday is enough. Already know that there is at least two places I have to go: Suzhou and Nanchang. The latter to say hi to some friends and see if the old filthy cesspool is the same as it was when I left. The former because there seems to be a lot of wonderful people in Suzhou.

Here is a question: is it too early to start yelling at teenagers for having bad posture when you yourself has not seen the end of your twenties yet? I was walking behind to wastrels, wearing the pants that are almost falling off, slouching like there was no tomorrow and dragging their feet. They were also walking slower than my 85 year-old grandmother who had both her hips replaced. So I bellowed that they should stand up straight, walk like they had leg muscles and pull up their g****mn pants. They merely looked at me as if I had been speaking Swahili? Why do youngsters think that the rest of the world needs to see their underwear? Are they simple incapable of understanding how to use a belt?

There are two theories extant in re the pants-below-the-waist/arse.

I hope so too. Mine is very mild, kinda comes and goes and is centered for 3 days only at one spot. I read more about apendicitis and it says pain would increase and migrate... So, hopefully it is nothing.

Oh, well, nothing was found. Dr. said that it could be a mini-hernia but she said it can't be felt and it's better to just monitor and not take any medicine. She also said taht it if was apendicitis, it would become worse by now. It's been almost a week and the pain hasn't become worse. It rather became less and tingles just once in a while. I am thinking it may be just my stomach acting out. Thanks for asking agagagagag

I remember it started as a mild pain, my dad (the doctor aoaoaoaoao) decided I was faking and sent me to school, where I promptly passed out during morning assembly and was driven home, where I spent two days running a fever, moaning "If I don't move, it doesn't hurt". Finally it dawned on the parental units that something might be amiss and they carted me off to hospital, where another doctor concluded that not only did I have appendicitis but, as he operated, the sodding thing had torn itself off and was liying snug as a bug somewhere in my ripcage, all blue, swollen and ready to burst.
So, Cheeks, I would say the sword of Damocles no longer hangs precariously above your stomach. Now I don't have to be worried jjjjjjjjjj jjjjjjjjjj

I am indeed. The hunt for moon cakes stems from the difficulty I have had describing them to friends and family and employers. So I am going to buy a bunch of them and serve them, just so they understand why I turn slightly green and shudder at the mentioning of moon cakes. And when I tell them the story of Chang Er and her rabbit, they look at me funny and start talking about "taking time off" and "a nice, quiet institution somewhere in the countryside".

Just finished making a LazyDaisy Cake (single layer). Passed down from my (Great) Aunt Thelma. So-o-o easy!! So-o-o good!!
Beat 2 eggs with 1 cup sugar (substitutes do work, too). Add 1 cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, pinch salt, 1 teaspoon each Vanilla and Almond extacts. Mix well. Pour in 1/2 cup boiling milk and 1 tablespoon butter/margarine. Mix (again).
Put into (greased, floured) 9-inch baking pan.
Cook 35 minutes at 375*F.
Cool and serve directly from pan. Frosting not necessary.
NB Double recipe for layer (birthday) cake. Can add chocolate/fruit/nuts if you wish. YumYum.

I'm trying to get some (anglicized) Farsi, myself....on account of my penpal.......but their script is beyond my poor, tired, aged brain. However, the grammar is similar to Latin.

The Atatürk reformed version. The original Arabic written form was banned several decades ago as part of the Kemalist reform process, thankfully. Chinese characters are giving me enough problems. Don't think I could handle two languages with unfamiliar written systems. I try to memorize the characters when practising Chinese by writing the character on one side and the translation + pinyin on the other side. Needless to say, Chinese is not going as swiftly as Turkish. I have only done three units in my Turkish language course and I already have a working vocabulary of 200 words, which I can make into simple sentences. Grammar-wise Turkish is quite straightforward, SOV sentence structure etc.
One of the things I really do miss about China was the fact that I could go out and practice my Chinese with anyone. Here, I have to find restaurants where the owners are willing to listen to me stammer out my slightly-less-than-hopeless Chinese.
What is it that girl sings..."I wish I was a punck rocker with flowers in my hair"???...well...I would be singing, "I wish I was that French guy, you know, the chap who translated the Rosetta Stone, then I would have no problem learning languages on my own" lalalala.....

DS, Chinese flour usually is self-rising. And baking powder can be replaced by soda bicarbonate which you mix with a little drop of vinegar solution. Both former and latter can be found in China.

My understanding is that ovens are nowhere to be found in China. My friends and family send me over some homeland goodies now and then and once they sent me a bag of Dutch bread mix, because I miss my Dutch bread. I have however never come across an oven in a normal Chinese, upmarket Chinese or foreigner's apartment.
How do you bake without an oven??

You can buy portable ovens here for a couple hundred. We got one...good enough to make a kickass lasagne or a small roast but I don't forsee any turkey dinners being cooked in it.
Look around. Small ovens are easy to come by.

Do you have Carrefour? Where are you actually? Every city in China has also some local chains of shopping malls for home appliances (Guomei or Gome home appliances and Dazhong are nation-wide competing chains).

There are several Carrefours and other stores around, but to be honest I have never looked for ovens there. I just didn't think they'd have them. Knowing this doesn't change things though.. I wouldn't want to invest in things like an oven or a microwave when I'll probably leave them behind after a year anyway.

They are all counter top models. I have a toaster oven and plan on upgrading to a larger oven this year. They can cost as much as 500RMB. The larger ones can even have a rotisserie. They are large enough to cook a cake, a large roast etc.
Metro also carries them.

To have a new area for general recipes for and from anywhere is good too. Now we have yours and Amonks. I'm always amazed at how 1) those who post the most and act as or are considered leaders a) don't follow the rules and b) don't heed the major criticism launched against all incantations of the saloon that people don't stay on topic and hence you can't find a GD thing.
2) take time to remember that there are places for posting things so that we do, in fact, help people out.
Guess that's why I avoid this most inane topic so much.

I have cut and pasted into word docs both lines at old Saloon. There was a third but I didn't push for it. I pasted into word docs along with the pictures so too "heavY" to post here since I don't have urls to pics.
1) Mr Nobody's table top. He not only showed pic of oven but pics of some of his and Mrs Nobody's creations. He could do a turkey breast for sure.
2) Hamish posted pic of his "under the counter, imported from Italy, guaranteed ot make the most meager apartment a home if not also a pizza parlor oven.
Then there was the discussion we had about how to "roll your own" aka Build it yourself oven. These were mostly along the lines of a coleman stove add on oven best used outdoors, on a secure patio or otherwise with great ventilation.
Will email to any who PM their email address. Would post links for how to "roll your own" but given the many here who can't follow posting rules we'll surely end up with at least one death by asphyxiation.

But any local snapper or other white-meat fish should do. Eel, if properly prepped, or tuna. Not sold on wahoo or jacks, though. Too strong a taste for my liking. Shrimp, scallop, crabmeat is always welcome. And you can include lightly cooked green beans, carrots, asparagus, baby/cocktail corn instead/with the regular choice of avacado/cucumber. Or even sliced mango!!! with spicy lobster....
Rice (the short grained, sticky kind) is steamed, then "cut through" with (sweet) rice-wine vinegar....not too much, just to give a light, pearlescent colouration.

Because Nana told me to? I think the recipe is ground raisins quickly mixed in flour to keep them from sticking, the usual flour/sugar/salt sort of thing and some spices. Rollinto logs, slice into nuggets, and try to keep my brother out of them. Don't have the recipe here.

I found everything finally. At least I hope so. Sugar, chocolate from Beijing doctor's trip, vanilla from new import store, marshmallows (hopefully not flavored) and evaporated milk from Germany (import store.) That's the one I'm most worried about. They didn't have any american or other brands that didn't have sugar. Lots of sweetened condensed milk (which makes not my favorite fudge), no guarantee that this German stuff is correct.
BTW Missi, every one of the 6 bakeries I approached refused to hand over even a drop of food coloring for christmas cookies. One finally said the baking supply store is an hour away and they have it. Not worth the trouble.

Thanks Bunny, that's very North American of you. I am personally organizing and fixing the food for a word game-Christmas treat party for my students and favorite Chinese teachers (at EF). Everytime I talk it up that I am making tradional Christmas treats the new teacher from the southern hemisphere corrects me that I am making American Christmas treats. In my experience, colorfully frosted Christmas sugar cookies are slightly more widespread than the western US, but so be it. Suffice it to say I don't think she'll become my best friend before I leave EF.
Will send you the Uni address when I get it. I'd like to have an oven and make real family favorites next year, not just sort-of look-alikes. Normally I make homemade paper thin sugar cookies with at least 5 colors of icing on each. Very old family tradition that I miss a lot. And, of course, the pfeffernusse that etr that don't meet etr's standards.
I haven't actually made any of the food for tomorrow's party yet, and only have 2 of 3 games ready. Please see new post in the bar for helping me out.

Now, I was not sure where to post this, so this thread will do: I am going to step up my Chinese studies a notch or two after New Years. The way I study is by following the lessons in Integrated Chinese, which is quite good for the written aspect. I make flashcards with the characters. Then I allocate 15 characters per week. I do the grammar, then I write each character, three lines of one, then three lines of the second and so forth. Once I have gone through all the characters like that, I go over the grammar again, then return to the flashcards.
Then I practise a bit harder on the active vocabulary. I take each room in my apartment and all the things in them whose name I don't know in Chinese, I write down on a big list. Then look them up. I then read the list over and over and over again, and jump around like a madman pointing at stuff while shouting in Chinese. I have to do that until it sticks. It all leads up to an exam each Sunday. Just to make it more fun, I also do the same with Turkish.
How do you guys do it? Any recommendations?

Is it just me or does everyone with even the slightest knowledge of Chinese have to suppress the urge to make fun of those hip, free-spirited individuals who walks around with Chinese tattoos, completely oblivious to the actual meaning of them? Not that there is anything wrong with having Chinese characters tattooed on one's body, I am even toying with the idea myself (though I am going to do a lot more Chinese studying before I make my final decision) but, honestly, what kind of person staggers into a tattoo parlor and requests a non-Chinese chap to write stuff on him, not knowing the language himself and making no effort to verify that the tattoo artist speaks in either?
The reason for this rant was female, blond and standing next to me on the train to work. I noticed she had the character for Wo3 written on her wrist. I asked her why. She said it meant "Peace". I informed her that it did not. Have now learned that I should never do that again. She got rather miffed. It just makes little sense to me to have something written on the body, in a language one cannot speak or read, and trusting that the tattoo guy knows what he is doing. I makes me wonder how many people out there are running around with "mu shu pork" written on them.

The china will be an heirloom. The folks have been collecting the stuff for ages, it's all they use. It's made at the Royal Danish China Factory. One small cup costs half my monthly salary, unless you, as the folks do, by 2nd sortment, which are the products with minute cosmetic flaws that only a gung-ho china expert would see.

I'm trying to make a budget and the prices in my Lonely Planet guide may be obsolete by now. I'm not a backpacker, hostels are germ ridden sink-holes not fit for human habitation. I would have to stay at semi-nice hotels, ie. no visible roaches and western toilet.

Lawyer found some place in Guizhou that she would like to see...apparently it's like Yangzhou, before it got too touristy. Not that I mind Yangzhou, I've been there and we're also going there. She wants to see the ijiang river. Not taking the cruise from Guilin to Yangzhou, too time consuming and a bit boring, at least that was my impression when I took it. No specific need to go to Guilin either, unless one is dead keen on seeing how a town turns into one huge brothel after nightfall. We probably need to do some more planning and estrict ourselves, since now we're going froim one end of China to another.
Yeah, I know it's close to several momths pay for FT's, but it's the only vacation I will get in 2009. The Turks only give me 20 days of paid vacation, so I want to enjoy it as much as I can and that means good hotels.

Being a dogsbody in the classroom. They tend to be working class women who haven't been to Uni but like working with kids, IME. Pay isn't great, about 13,000 quid a year IIRC
There's a scheme where you can work as one and get your QTS at the same time, but apparently the resulting qualification isn't taken as seriously as the PGCE (viz: International Schools back over here etc), which is why I've opted for the latter.

I think the animal you're thinking of is known as a graduate assistant in the US. That would be some poor Ph.D. seeking soul, or sometimes Master's seeking, who teaches the basic entry level English classes, run the biology lab sections, etc, under the supervision of the professor whose name is on the class. It's usually part-time work in the field of the degree-seeker, at pretty low wage. I'm surprised they would import them.

I went back to baking bread for Hubby and me (better for us, and cheaper than buying from the store) a little while ago. One batch = 4 loaves. We only need/use 3 in a week, so I always had an extra to share with family. Now he tells me that he'd like 2 sandwiches in his lunch bag each day. That's another 6 sandwiches per week (= about 2 extra loaves). So I now have to make 2 batches each week...one "regular" and one cinnamon-raisin.

Ericthered,an albino wallaby is indeed a rare creature.There was one running with a mob just outside the small country town in which we used to shop.My husband learned that many people were trying to shoot it for its skin. As we were driving home one evening, we saw the little wallaby, but it was obvious that she had been wounded. My husband made the decision to kill her with a clean headshot, to save her from any more misery. I have her skin. The sad part is that had she not been rare, she would have been left alone. That was the only albino wallaby that we had ever seen. I have also seen only one albino kangaroo and I also have it's skin, but that is a whole other story. They are indeed beautiful creatures and I have hand raised quite a few orphaned joey's (as the babies are called) Unfortunately in this world,far too many people covet rare, beautiful and precious things.

Should I buy whatever I can find here in the boonies of Changchun, or should I hold out until I get to a place known for its selection or quality? Is there such a thing, really? I don't need anything rare or special. SIL likes batik-looking colors, the tie-dyed look, and I want something exotic to use as wall art (not expensive). What are all of your opinions?

most of it is made down there anyways and you'll get more or less the same price considering those guys order in bulk (when they don't own the factories outright). The best bet is to ask your students about where to go to buy silk goods (and specify that you're not interested in malls) or even where you could get silk things made.

So much depends on what sort of silk you want - modern colours, solids, traditional etc. Wherever you are you should be able to find traditional silks no dramas - and some of them are absolutely glorious - and would be fantastic as wall hangings or frames around embroideries etc.
If you are looking for modern fabrics for shirts and skirts or plains it may be more difficult. You will find that the weights will all be autumn-summer weight by now as well in the local shops.
I went silk shopping in Shanghai - they have enough of everything that you could want - but it was a high-end place and now that I know better, as expensive as hell!!
Batik/tie-dyed look is going to be more difficult. But if you're running short of time - buy in the boonies, you'll find enough to at least test the waters. See if your s-i-l likes it and then when you come back - come back to Xi'an and we'll try again! ahahahahah

it's not that bad in the north.. we got central heating almost everywhere. however, once ou get down south of nanjing, there ain't none to be found. The biggest problem here is not the cold as much as it is the windchill. Make sure that whatever jacket you get is windproof and that should do it. If you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, then you need a long/tall jacket that can cover most of your body.
That's usually good enough for me.
However, if you're planning to venture further up north than beijing ( like Harbin), then you will need thermal undies/overalls which can be purchased locally.

I work up 'north', but I find it is about the same temperature all winter as in southern Ontario. Standard winter boots if/when it snows. Classrooms and apartments and stores are all heated. My apartment is central heated with water (I don't control) it was +24C all winter.
I agree with Noles about the coat, wind proof and long. I only wore long-johns twice last year and that was because of the wind (my coat isn't long enough).
I did go to Harbin and it was definitely cold. The wind made it even colder. You would need warm warm boots, thick warm socks, really warm gloves, a coat with a hood, warm touque, and sweater layers under the coat.
Down south, like Suzhou it is colder that up here. Buildings, schools, apartments etc are not heated. Apartments have a heat/cold air conditioner which is slightly effective in warming the place. Hotels MAY be ok. Stores aren't heated. I was never so cold in my life as I was the year I spent teaching near Suzhou. They don't get much snow there - except when Missi visits. Check Missi's schedule before planning your trip south. ahahahahah

Come to Dongguan. You will need a light jacket for outside and a warm sweater for inside. Like they said, no heating in the buildings. Think Florida temps at the same time of year.

I really don't like frigid, icy, deeper-than-a-gnat's belly snowfalls. My winters are of the "damp and cold-to-the-bone" variety (on account of high humidity + "breezes" of around 15-20mph). The temps aren't usually that low - seldom get less than mid-50s at night - but we can get awfully chill. Some newer homes have reverse Air, but most of us still have to rely on space heaters. And we do have fairly warm days (up to 65* or 70*) sometimes. Just depends on what Mother Nature is feeling like.
At the moment, my "itinerary" will include BJ (obviously), Xi'an, Dongguan, Shanghai and (a definite MustSee) Suzhou.....but not if Missi akakakakak is going to be there then agagagagag
Mind you, I have still to work out the details.....times/days & dates/trains/hotels, etc. So I will be checking back with everyone a little closer to time.
I'm really looking forward to seeing you all. As many as I can squeeze in, anyways.

Just picked up my text books for the new semester. Also checked out my assigned classrooms by peaking through the windows in the doors. The classroom I have been assigned for my audio visual class HAS NO COMPUTER AND NO PROJECTOR ahahahahah bibibibibi ahahahahah Guess I'm supposed to sing and dance. They have until week 5, when this class begins, to find me another room.

Making me cards would work, but the videos and audios would be useless, as no where to play them. I know - I'll show the students the cover of a DVD movie and tell them that this is what I'd show if I had the equipment. Then I'll make them act out what they think the movie is like. Good for their oral practice.
Just had a thought - maybe this is the school's way of trying to make me invite students to my home. "Sorry, Ruth, no A/V classrooms available. But you have a big TV and a big livingroom. Should be no problem to move class to your house." Nice try, folks. I'm on to them. ahahahahah

I DO have my own laptop, projector and CD player if it comes down to that. Purchased for use in the poor, poor high school in the poor, poor city where I began life as a Chinese teacher. But darned if I'm letting the admin at THIS place know that. They need to provide me with the tools to do the job.
I'm pulling my own little passive aggressive hissy fit. Secretary wants the teaching plans by this coming Thursday. Keep in mind I just picked up the books yesterday. Emailed back that I can make the plan for two of my classes but couldn't plan the rest until I had the CD for the text book and knew whether I'd have A/V equipment to teach with. Waiting to see what kind of a response that generates.

As an aside, how much face does a guy lose when he's still a teacher at the same uni but no longer the dean? Turns out the FTs weren't the only ones who didn't like the guy.

No rooms with a projector available, but they did slot me into the listening lab. Checked it out yesterday. There are 60+ carrels, each with its own computer screen and set of earphones. The stuff up front looks like a sound booth in a recording studio. Not what I had in mind to show movies on, but will have to make do. They scare the bejesus out of me. They have a hard exoskeleton but I stomp on them anyhow. Faster than raid as they can move out of sight too quickly for me to get the raid. asasasasas

I didn't bother with the camera. Once I determined it was no longer moving I got layers of paper towel, scooped it up and ran it across the road to the garbage can.
No help at all from my Knight in Shining Armor. He laughs at me when I get in my Damsel in Distress mode. (Maybe that's why I don't try it; never works.) Worse, he accused me of murdering the spider. I claim self-defense.

"Yi, er, san, si, wu" sounding off in the street outside my window. The poor freshmen are covered from neck to wrist to toe in blue army fatigues doing their military training out in the heat. Seems to be the white-shirt campus security guys who are doing the training. No army guys in sight as far as I can tell. They count to five as they march and then stop mid-stride. Now they are down on one knee, in the road, listening to White-Shirt talking. Every so often they all yell out 'hao' or something. All part of the fine university education, folks.

I hafta move. We knew this was coming when we moved in. Hoped it would be later, rather than sooner. We were told about 2 weeks into the semester that now is the time, but also told there was no rush. I didn't want to move during the semester. But now, the building I'm in has changed hands and people are making noises again. I'd postpone it until after Christmas if I could, but that's gonna be a busy time with Bunny's visit and then my trip to Canada in early January - so the week before Christmas, when most of my classes are finished, seems to be the best time.
Not a very far move, just up the street from the townhouse we're in to a 2-storey apartment. They want all the FTs in one building so we are 'easier to look after.' Actually, the FAO has obtained the apartment block and some other dept. has taken over the townhouse block I'm in. It's a downgrade in size (new place has 2 baths, 2 bedrooms and a study) but should be an improvement over the leaky ceiling and resultant mold we get here during the rainy season. I'm not upset about moving, in fact am quite looking forward to the new place. But - I've accumulated lotsa stuff in my time here and I don't relish the packing and unpacking that's involved. Sigh.

Did it on the 6th try. No trick, but it does depend on the array of dark green dots you're given at the start. Begin out near the edges and drive it towards the dark green dots. Even figuring out how to do it, it took me 5 tries to do it a second time.
Funny, I just used the expression "arranging an activity with Chinese students is like herding cats" last week with one of my classes. And they were adults! ahahahahah ahahahahah ahahahahah

This doesn't exactly belong in the "Happy" thread so I'll post here. It does give me a sense of poetic justice being meted out. Dropped into the Center that runs the summer camp I've been involved with the past four years. The very one that told me FOR SURE to hire 7 teachers and then, 6 days before camp was to begin, said, "Sorry, we only need 3." Seems they can't find enough FTs for their classes. ahahahahah

I'm learning new English words from my students. Anyone know what 'deuterogamy' means without looking it up? It showed up on a ppt during a student presentation today. I had to come home and google it. It's not even in the Oxford dictionary I keep on my desk. Where do these kids find these words?

In one class last year, they had a series of maxims posted all over the classroom. In one, they used the word "satiety" I'm usually pretty good with the words, I had to research that one just lile "deuterogamy"
The electronic dictionaries won't tell them how common a word or phrase is

Odd coincidence. I was thinking about this thread yesterday. Had a random thought while walking in Tallahassee (here visiting my kids) and was wondering where to post it.
The streets here are REALLY dirty. Some litter, sure, but lots of natural dirt stuff - leaves, gravel, grass clippings, twigs. Where I live in China is LOTS cleaner. No one here to clean up.
