Therion - Celtic frost.

Today I bought another Arctic Monkeys CD as someone 'borrowed' my last one.  Plus a Deep forest and a couple of Mongolian/T'tan ones.

I did the same thing this past weekend under the influence of Apple's itunes promo featuring their latest single. Can't say i'm impressed but nevertheless, I kept 3 of the songs in my library.
I tracked down Merle Hagard's 40 greatest hits over the weekend and I'm having a blast listening to it. Also, I got my dirty paws on Tenacious D's first album and it's the closest thing to therapy in a CD than i could get find... love love love love love it.

Downloaded a bunch of Otis Redding recently. What a god. Big deals have been made recently over the passings of soul giants Ray Charles, James Brown and Wilson Pickett. All greats for sure, but for my money nobody can touch Otis Redding when it comes to soul.

If you haven't heard Otis's cover of the Rolling Stones' Satisfaction, I strongly suggest you immediately leap to your nearest download site or CD shop and get it. Wow... It's definitely a staple on the Shamrock playlist... bfbfbfbfbf

Another one- the one on the iPod right now- is Mutiny, I Promise You  by The New Pornographers. I was attracted first by the title...but it's a great song.

What's the weight of the world worth to ya, kid
Go write down what you see
And see how far it can go
What's the weight of the world worth to your side
Here is where you got lost
And here is how you got by

And here's the mutiny I promised you
And here's the party it turned into
...

Also, think I've mentioned it before, but if you don't already have it, by all means acquire a copy of Everclear's Local God. Not the original intention, of course, but the best musical account of the expat life in China I've ever heard.

In Taberna

Corvus Corax.

In taberna quando sumus,
non curamus, quid sit humus,
sed ad ludum properamus,
cui semper insuclamus.
quid agatur in taberna,
ubi nummus est pincerna,
hoc est opus, ut queratur.
sed quid loquar, audiatur!

Quidam ludunt, quidam bibunt, quidam indiscrete uiuunt.
sed in ludo qui morantur,
ex hiis quidam denudantur; quidam ibi uestiuntur,
quidam saccis induuntur
ibi nullus timet mortem,
sed pro Bacho mittunt sortem.

Primo pro nummata uini,
ex hac bibunt libertini:
semel bibunt pro captiuis,
post hec bibunt ter pro uiuis,
quater pro christianis cunctis,
quinquies pro fidelibus defunctis,
sexies pro sororibus uanis,
septies pro militibus siluanis.

Corvus Corax.

Would this perchance be sung to the tune of "O, Divina Clementina"?

Hmmm...well, it does work, if you stretch some (musical) phrases a little. It'd be a very long version indeed...one verse per four lines.
But then, Corvus Borax's version probably isn't the 3-minute-seven-seconds dance mix, either... aoaoaoaoao

On the other hand, it IS a song about raisin' hell in a bar... uuuuuuuuuu

I didn't say I understood it, just listening to it.

It's got it's own tune. It's also bloody old. Not sure how old, but some of Corvus Borax (I like the name) go way way back into the dim mists of history. Like their war bagpipes stuff. Some of their more recent stuff is new agy pseudo celtic folk pop, though. But it still sounds good. (Plus the traitors play techno in the off season, and it creeps in betimes.)

A lot of their stuff is in German, Croatian, Latin, Old French, Celtic of various kinds, etc etc. Not much in English methinks, or at least I didn't notice any.

It's sung to the tune of "My Darling Clementine".

Be an interesting one to use with students. Need to think about the language, but they see a lot on TV anyway.
