It makes the posts of that era pretty meaningless - it is like Gin&Tonic without the gin, Plum Pie without the plums, a push-up bra without .... Newcomers must think we are communicating in some kind of code to avoid censorship in China.

I know nothing. I guess we will have to wait for an explanation.

I think I will buy one of these Tshirts - it would save me from all the grovelling, flattering, pleading, blandishments, emotional backmail, manipulation and lying required in achieving a pretty basic goal.

If China is so good at copying how come we get something like this?

I wonder what the T-shirts will be like in another 50 years?  I was considered "way out" by some folk, when I was young, but I certainly wouldn't have considered wearing a shirt which looked like a newspaper. Thanks xwarrior!

One of my favorite T-shirts has a picture of that plant surrounded by the words "Fix the deficit -- Legalise".

I lived in Ottawa a few blocks from Parliament hill and delighted in wearing that shirt when I went out for breakfast since the restaurant I frequented was also quite popular with MPs, senators and their staff.

I have never been into hip-hop (looks like break dancing of the 70's to me)or crap but I got the message after checking out DMC.   Nice one .

Never seen 'ning' on its own but it brought back memories of the word 'nong.' In New Zealandese a 'nong' is a genial description applied to someone who has done something stupid. Sometimes it is delivered as 'ningnong.'

The word came from the UK and, according to Wiktionary, 'ning' and 'nong' can be found in Mandarin.

In a situation like this I always suspect the hand of Spike Milligan and the Goon Show at work - they managed to sneak some bastardised forms of Chinese into the English language before the world became sensitive to every little thing.

We shall now all stand and sing the 'Ying Tong Song.'

       

Another thread in the Saloon notes, "Student caught with 35-foot long crib sheet ...  in The Bar (ON-TOPIC)"

This student has failed to match that for length ... but cannot be faulted for breadth.

I know that in 2012 we should not refer to this as an 'Irish solution' to a problem faced by all students in China, but I am sure her classmates (those sitting in the rear of the classroom, anyway)appreciated the effort.

After all, memorising E = something or other is not easy.
