I don't know about the uni, but my dad worked in Lanzhou for two years from 2004 and I visited him once or twice. It's not pleasant. Not much to do there at all, the pollution is thick, the countryside barren.
Having said that, the food was plentiful and cheap- one of my favourite restaurants in the world is the Friendship Restaurant opposite the museum.
